PET FOOD SELECTION
When working with new pet owners, it’s important to stress that they should be building good eating habits that will keep their companions healthy for the rest of their animal's lives. Key factors when selecting a pet food include:
- Species
- Pet life stage, size and activity level
- Special needs (health conditions)
- Number of pets
- Individual animal’s preferences
- Cost
Life Stages
Pets have different nutritional requirements as they grow and age:
- Growing animals need more protein, energy, and certain vitamins and minerals aid in their development
- Adults generally need less overall energy and nutrients, depending on their activity level
- Older dogs typically need a higher quality protein, but lower levels of fats and carbohydrates
- Very active animals need a diet that supplies more energy and nutrients to match
Although pet foods labeled “all life stages” can be fed to young animals, adults and seniors, formulations for puppies, kittens or mature adults have been developed to meet these animals’ specific needs and are generally recommended.
